Other causes include sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia or gonorrhea, which can inflame the urethra or reproductive organs. In women, vaginal infections such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis can also cause dysuria. In men, prostate problems like prostatitis can lead to painful urination. Irritation from chemicals found in soaps, douches, or spermicides, as well as medications or recent urinary tract procedures, can also result in discomfort while urinating.
Treatment for painful urination depends on the underlying cause. For bacterial infections such as UTIs or STIs, antibiotics are typically prescribed to eliminate the infection. For non-infectious causes, like irritation from chemical exposure, avoiding the irritant and using soothing agents can help relieve symptoms. For men with prostatitis, antibiotics or other medications may be necessary to reduce inflammation and discomfort. In all cases, increasing fluid intake helps flush out the urinary system and reduce irritation. If painful urination persists or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or blood in the urine, it is important to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
